PU vs PVC Conveyor Belts: Why Food Plants Choose PU

Quick answer: No belt is best for everything — only best for the job. For direct food contact (confectionery, pasta, meat, seafood, bakery) choose PU belts: clear, clean, odourless, resistant to oil, wash-down and cutting, with grades available that meet FDA food-contact requirements. For packaged food and non-food goods, cheaper PVC belts are an option, though they usually do not last as long as PU.

PU vs PVC comparison
| PU belt | PVC belt | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Polyurethane top cover | Polyvinyl chloride top cover |
| Food contact | Clear, clean, odourless; suitable for direct contact; FDA-compliant grades available | Mainly packaged and non-food goods |
| Oil / wash-down resistance | Good | Fair |
| Cut resistance | Good — thick grades handle repeated cutting | Fair |
| Belt body | Thin, tough, high tensile strength | Thicker |
| Price | Higher | Lower |
| Service life | Longer | Usually shorter than PU |
4 reasons food plants prefer PU
- Direct food contact: the PU cover is clear, clean, non-toxic and odourless;
- Oil, wash-down and cut resistance: thin, tough, high-tensile belts suit lines cleaned often;
- Food safety: PU is regarded as a greener material and FDA food-grade versions are available, whereas some PVC formulations contain additives that call for caution in direct food contact;
- Durability: PU resists cutting and, once thick enough, can be used on cutting machines for repeated cuts.
Other food belt materials
Food belts are also made of PE, silicone, canvas, rubber, felt, polypropylene, nylon, PTFE, plastic slat chain and modular mesh. For high temperatures consider PTFE or silicone; for draining or freezing consider plastic slat chain or modular mesh.
FAQ
Can PVC belts be used for food?
Yes for packaged food, or with PVC grades explicitly rated food-grade. If the product touches the belt directly, is oily or the line is washed often, PU is the better choice.
Is PU always more expensive than PVC?
The purchase price is usually higher, but PU lasts longer and tolerates cleaning, so total cost of ownership is not necessarily higher. Compare over the expected service period and replacement frequency.
